The evidence for the following down to Patience is circumstantial and cannot be proved.

11.  [COAT591] William Coates married (at Calverley, 18th July 1666) [STAB592] Sarah Stables. They had at least two children baptised at Calverley as follows:

• William (baptised 12th May 1669);

• 10. [COAT601] James (baptised 1st January 1673-74), married Elizabeth Gaunt, see later.

William died at Calverley (buried there, 30th January 1675-76). "Widow Coates" died at Calverley (buried there, 26th January 1689-90).

10.  [COAT601] James Coates (born 1674), of Pudsey, married (at Calverley, 22nd June 1689) [GAUN602] Elizabeth Gaunt. They had eight children born either at Pudsey or Stanningley, and all baptised at Calverley as follows:

• James (born at Pudsey, baptised 8th October 1693), presumably died young;

• Mary (born at Pudsey, baptised 20th October 1695), married (at Calverley, 24th May 1714) Jeremy Scott of Pudsey;

• Samuel (born at Pudsey, baptised 6th January 1697-98);

• Elizabeth (born at Pudsey, baptised 16th December 1699), married (at Calverley, 9th February 1713-14) Thomas Pearson;

• Sarah (born at Stanningley, baptised 2nd January 1701-02), presumably died young;

• James (born at Stanningley baptised 18th February 1704-05);

• Sarah (born at Stanningley, baptised 5th November 1707).

James Coates paid 15s. 4d. Land Tax (at Pudsey, 1704). He died at Stanningley (buried at Calverley, 15th August 1712).

9.  [COAT611] Benjamin Coates (born 1691), a clothier, married (at Leeds, St. Peter, 18th November 1713) [MARH612] Patience Marshall (born 1696, see MARSHALL), both shown as of Stanningley-green. They had eight children born at Stanningley as follows:

• Joseph (born 9th May 1714, baptised same day at Pudsey Independent Chapel), married (at Leeds, St. Peter, 17th June 1744) Susan Smith, both shown as of Bramley. They had at least one child born at Bramley, who was Joseph (baptised there 28th February 1746-47). Joseph died at Bramley (buried there, 2nd January 1749-50);

• Benjamin (baptised at Calverley, 24th September 1715, later baptised at Pudsey Independent Chapel, 20th October 1715). He married Susannah ---, and they had at least one children born at Bramley, who was Sarah (baptised there 5th May 1745);

• Elizabeth (baptised at Calverley, 25th September 1716, later baptised at Pudsey Independent Chapel, 15th October 1716);

• John (baptised at Calverley, 1st January 1717-18);

• James (baptised at Calverley, 11th April 1719), married (at Calverley, 8th May 1743) Mary Reyner;

• Samuel (son of Benjamin) died at Stanningley (buried at Calverley, 14th January 1720-21);

• Abraham (baptised at Calverley, 29th November 1721);

• Abigail (baptised at Calverley, 13th April 1723), possibly married (at Leeds, St. Peter, 29th April 1755) William Ross.

8.  [COAT621] --- Coates (child of Benjamin & Patience). Could have been Benjamin, Joseph or Elizabeth, the latter being the most likely. The other siblings were perhaps too young to have had a child in c.1735.

• 7. [COAT632] Patience Coates ([born c.1735], granddaughter of Benjamin & Patience) married (at Calverley, 31st March 1755) [GALW631] James Galloway (born 1733, see GALLAWAY).
