44.  [CARO249] Charles I le grand [the great] or Charlemagne (born at Aix-la-Chapelle, April 742) was nominally King of Italy from 774 following his conquest, but he made his infant son Pippin the sub-King (781), and after his death Bernhard (810). Charlemagne died January 814. See CAROLINGIAN HOUSE for further details.

43.  [ITAL282] Carloman/Pippin I (born 777, son of [CARO249] Charlemagne & Hildegarde) was sub-King of Italy (781-810, ruling in Charlemagne's name) had a relationship with [AQU2252] Bertha de Toulouse (daughter of [AQU2241] William of Gellone, see AQUITAINE DUKEDOM), though they were perhaps afterwards married. Another of his mistresses was Chrothais. Pippin died at Milan (12th July 810).

42.  [ITAL291] Bernhard (born c.797, illegitimate son of Pippin by his mistress Chrothais) married (813) [SEPT272] Kunigunde de Gellone (see SEPTIMANIA). He was sub-King of Italy (810-14, ruling until 814 in Charlemagne's name), then King of Italy (814-18). After rebelling, he was sentenced to death. This was commuted to being blinded, from which punishment he died three days later (21st August 818). Kunigunde died 19th June 835.

41.   [ITAL301] Pippin II (born 815, son of King Bernhard) was Count of Paris Region, Count of Vermandois, Count of Senlis, possibly married Rothaide (daughter of 42. Wala de Bobbio, by Rotlinge/Rolent/Hellinburge de Gellone). Pippin died at Milan (878).
