RETURN TO POST-1538 FAMILIES PAGE
The events prior to 1786 have been based on the assumption that the baptism of Joshua Crabtree Rhodes in 1802 is indicative of an earlier marriage between a Rhodes and a Crabtree. It is assumed this would have been the one between John Rhodes and Sarah Crabtree, in 1764, particularly as Sarah Crabtree's father was Joshua Rhodes.
Joshua Crabtree Rhodes' parents were Joshua Rhodes and Hannah Rhodes, but has it proved impossible so far to positively identify which Rhodes family was which. It seems likely that Joshua Rhodes was from Todmorden, and that it was Hannah Rhodes whose mother had been Sarah Crabtree. However, Hannah's baptism has not been found. On the assumption the Joshua Rhodes was born say 1765, and that his wife Hannah Rhodes was born say 1766, the following facts will "fit" provided the Nancy Rhodes born 1766 has become this Hannah Rhodes.

8. [RHOX621] John Rhodes, a clothier of Manningham, married (at Bradford, 20th September 1731) [DAVE622] Jane Davey, also of Manningham (possibly baptised at Birstall, 12th December 1710, illegitimate daughter of Anthony Hopkinson [son of Anthony] by Ann Davey). They had five children born at Manningham and baptised at Bradford as follows:

6. [RHOX642] Nancy (born at Allerton, baptised at Bradford, St. Peter, 17th October 1766). It is assumed that this Nancy is synonymous with the Hannah who married 1. [RHOD641] John Rhodes, the mason, see later. This is however pure supposition, without proof.
Samuel (born at Allerton, baptised at Bradford, 30th June 1776, father shown as being a weaver).
John and Sarah presumably had more children, but no others have been identified, but there is this lengthy gap between 1766 and 1776.
