HIS WILL
In the Name of God Amen. I Richard Barrow of Knotts in Stainton
in the County of Westmorland Yeoman, being sick in Body but of Sound
and perfect memory and of a disposering mind (praised be Almighty God for
the Saime) And knowing the uncertainty of this life here on Earth and
that all Flesh must yield unto Death when it shall please God to call Do make
and Ordain this is my last Will and Testament in manner and forme following
(That is to say) First and principally I Commit my Soule unto the Mercyfull pro-
-tection of Almighty God my Creator Trusting and stedfastly believeing that by the
Merits and Mediation of my Blessed Saviour and Redeemer Christ Jesus I shall Rec-
-eive and Obtain full pardon and Remission of all my Sinns and become an Inherit-
-our of Eternal Life in Glory. And my Body I commit to the Earth from whence it
was taken to be Buried in such decent and Christian Manner as my Executors
herein after Names shall be thought meet and Convenient. and as for my Temporal
Estate both Real and personal I dispose thereof as followeth. First it is my Will and
Mind and I do hereby Give devise and bequeath unto my son William Barrow his heires
and Assignes for Ever All my Messuages and Tenement and Freehold Lands with appar-
-tenances, commonly called and known by the name of Knotts Situate and being in
Stainton aforesaid in the said County of Westmorland Provided alwaiss and upon Condition
Nevertheless that the the [sic] said William Barrow his heires and assignes shall and do well and truly
pay or cause to be paid forth or out of my said Messuage and Tenement and Freehold Lands
and premisses called Knotts in Stainton aforesaid to the severall and respective persons herein
after Named their Severall and respective Executors or Administrators the severall and
respective Legacies or Sumes of Money herein after particularly Named and Mentioned on
days and Times herein after Limitted and appointed for payment thereof (That is to say)
It is my Will and Mind that my said son William Barrow his heires and Assignes shall and do
well and Truly pay or cause to be paid unto my Dear and Loving Wife Susannah Barrow
the sume of Four pounds of Lawfull money of Great Brittain yearly and every year from
the … of my Decease for and during the Terme of her Natural life for and in lieu
of the Dower and Widdow Estate out of my Freehold Estate afore Named if my said Wife shall
be willing to accept thereof But provided my said wife shall Claime her Dower and Widdow
Estate out of the premisses aforesaid according to Custom there used and allowed, the said year-
-ly payment of Four pound shall cease and be void any thing before mentioned to the Contrary
notwithstanding. Also it is my Will and Mind that my said son William Barrow his heires and ass-
-ignes shall enter into and upon my Said Messuage and Tenement Freehold Lands and
premisses on the Second Day of February next ensueing my Decease. And. Also that my
Executors hereinafter named shall and may Quietly Hold and Enjoy all the
Rents Issues and profitts of all my hereby above devised Messuage & Tenement Freehold Lands
and premisses from the time of my Decease until the said Second day of February then next
ensueing.. Also I give unto my said Dear and Loving Wife Susannah Barrow the sume of
Fiffteen pounds of Lawfull money of Great Brittain. Also I give to my son John Barrow the
Sume of Fiffty pounds of like lawful money. Also I give to my son Richard Barrow the sume
of Fiffty pounds of like lawfull money. Also I give to my Daughter Margarett the sume of
Ten pounds of like lawfull money. Also I give to me Daughter Agnes now wife of William
Carter the sume of Ten pounds. Also I give to me Daughter Susannah Barrow the sume
of
Thirty pounds all good and Lawfull Brittains money. All which said severall and
respective and
respective sumes or Legacies above mentioned It is my Will my said son
William Barrow his heires
or Assignes shall pay the sums at the End of one whole year next ensueing his Entrance or
right of Entrance into and upon my Freehold Lands and premisses above mentioned And
further it is my Will and Mind and I do hereby further give and bequeath out of the premisses
aforesaid unto my Executors hereinafter Named the full sume of Ten pounds to be paid to them
as those Legacies above are mentioned to be paid. Also it is further my Will and Mind and I do here-
-by further give unto my said son John Barrow the sume of Twenty pounds. Also I give unto my son
Richard Barrow the sume of Twenty pounds. Also I give to my Daughter Margarett the sume of
Five pounds. Also I give to me said Daughter Agnes the sume of Ten Pounds. And I give
unto my said Daughter Susannah the sume of Ten pounds All of which last mentioned Childs
portions given to me said Five Children last named It is my Will and Mind my said son William Barrow
his heires or Assignes shall and do well and truly pay the sumes respectively at the end of one
whole year next ensueing the Decease of Susannah Barrow my dear and loving Wife. And it is
my Will and Mind my said Messuage and Tenement Freehold Lands and premisses Called Knotts
in Stainton aforesaid Shall Stand Charged and Chargeable with all those Legacies and sumes of
Money to be paid as is above mentioned to the severall and respective persons above Named in
days and times above limitted for payment thereof. Also I give unto my son William
Barrow One Long Table and a B… both standing in the Body of the House. Also Two Meal
or Malt Chests standing in the upper Chamber over the said Body of the House And one pair
Bedstocks in the Buttery loft. Also It is my Will and Mind that after my Wifes decease my
son John shall have my Clock and Clock Case which I do hereby order to be then
delivered unto him. Also I give unto my son Richard my Joiner Chest now Standing in
the parlour My Large Bibbs and my Walking Cane. Also I give unto my Daughter
Agnes my best pair of Bedstocks Standing in the Parlour. Also I give unto my Daughter
Susannah my Clothes press. Also Standing in the Parlour. Joint Executors of this
My last Will and Testament I do hereby nominate make and Appoint Susannah
my Dear and Loving Wife and my said son John Barrow (Only I do hereby give
unto my Dear and Loving Wife all the remaining part of my Household Goods not above
disposed of, for her own proper use). And I do hereby give unto my said Executrix Suss-
-annah my Wife and John Barrow my said son all the rest and residue of my Goods
Cattle Chattells and personall effects whatsoever and wheresoever they paying all my
Just Debts and Funerall Expenses. Overseers hereof I name and Appoint my two
Very good Friends and Neighbours Richard Sill of Birkrigg parke and George Crossfield
of Low parke both within the Township of Preston Richard in the said County of
Westmorland, yeomen, and I ernestly desire them that they will assist my wife and
Children and as much as in their live to see this my Will performed. And as a
token of my Love to them I give to each of them Two Shillings and Six pence.
In Witness whereof I the said Richard Barrow to this my last Will and Testa-
-ment Have hereunto Set my Hand and Seal Sixteenth day of April in the
Fourteenth year of the Reigne of our Soveraigne Lord George defender of the Faith
And so forth, and in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and
Forty one.
