THOROLD THE SHERIFF

The early history is conjecture, because of conflicting information and dates. The existence of Sheriffs of Lincolnshire pre-Conquest is tenuous, so the suggested connection with Lady Godiva (who died perhaps 1067) could be equally erroneous.

31.  [THOR321] Thorold (born c.1040, said to be son of Sheriff Alwin) was Sheriff of Lincolnshire. He married (c.1065) [MALE322] Beatrice (born c.1046, daughter of William, see MALET). Thorold held lands at Bucknall (Lincs), which he gave to the Abbey of St. Cuthbert of Crowland, "for his soul". Thorold died by 1079, and afterwards Beatrice married 2. [ARCS331] William d'Arches (see ARCHES).
